A water rescue assignment was dispatched to Rock Creek Parkway and P Street NW shortly before 11 AM on Sunday, January 3rd, for a report of a car in the water. They arrived to find the vehicle almost entirely submerged on its roof in the icy creek.
Firefighters from Rescue Squad 1 entered the frigid water and began breaking up the ice that had formed, so they could access the car. Once they made it to the car they found one victim in the back seat of the vehicle. There was a report of a possible second victim. Due to the fact that the car was overturned on it's roof and they could not dive down into the frozen water one attempt was made to pull the vehicle out of the water with the winch. That was a failed effort and they then called for Wrecker 1. Rescue squad 2 had to respond back to the firehouse to get it. Once on the scene they lifted the car up enough to search the car. No other victims were found.
